Rye Pier - 15th May 2011

Subject: In search of the wreck of Eivion

Date: 15/May/2011 11:00AM

Location: Rye pier

Divers: Karen Lee, Youri Casselein, Puspendu Ghosh

Weather: Cold and Gloomy

Water Conditions:
Viz: 5 to 6 mts
Temp: 14'C
Depth: 2.4 to 2.8 mts

With our wreck course cancelled because of the bad weather, we decided to hunt for the wreck of the Eivion, a lime trader sunk in 1918, which was only a couple of fin kicks away from the Rye Pier.
With poor visibility, some current and not the best of navigation skills we missed the wreck, but we were in for a treat when a juvenile seal appeared to play with us.

On the way back to the pier we finally found the wreck, almost as if we were led to it by the seal.
We saw couple of juvenile Fiddler rays and the usual resident big ray passing by.
Lots of vegetiation and fish life on and around the wreck and lots of Sting rays sleeping under it.

Alltogether, it turned out to be a good dive!
