As we arrived at Mornington pier last Friday morning the fog was just lifting and blue sky all around. Looking over the edge of the pier the water looked crystal clear, it has been a while since I have had these conditions this good at mornington so I was pretty excited. As we headed from the wall out over the sea grass we saw , small gobies, a large flathead, and several goatfish working along the bottom. We reached the break in the pier were the water flows through and were greeted by several large schools. The water flows through the pier here and the fish school up here as the tide ebbs the current brings food and it makes a great area for the fish to get a feed. There is a resident school of old wives of around 50, long finned pike of around 100 to 200 and a large school of yellow eye mullet. Mixed in amongst the schools were yellow tail scad mackerel. As we moved through the gap and over the rocks we came across another large school of long finned pike even bigger than what was under the pier. We headed down the pier along the way we saw, magpie perch, scalyfin, flathead, small stingrays, snapper, goatfish, moonlighter's and a couple of sea horses. We finished the dive moved down the inside of the pier, here we found several large globefish and a very large stingray. Mornington is always a good dive with lots to see, but like many spots stunning with 15m viz. A great dive
