The long weekend was very quiet around Portsea & we had trouble getting the numbers up to get a dive running, so after a little bit of negotiating we were able to get our boat for Saturday morning. Only having 4 divers on the boat not only made for a very comfortable trip but also allowed us to choose which ever site we wanted. The J1 was where we decided to dive, mainly because it is the least dived of all the subs. Flat, clean water and no current, things could not be better. We entered from the break and Daz ran the line, I followed with Jim and Brenden buddying together, first we went to the stern deciding not to enter the crew's quarters, then all the way to the bow, the pressure hull on the J1 has really taken a beating but caution is still required when entering the different compartments as there is a deceiving amount of light coming through the openings, however it is coming through a lot of very small holes and egress is not possible through them.
Our wall dive was very relaxing, although the wind had picked up conditions were still fairly good. With not many dives running all divers were jumping onto this dive, Devils Dropoff is so called because of the amount of Blue Devils and this dive was no different, also the boys saw a very nice cray under a ledge that he is never coming out of.
