Flinders Pier September 28th

Divers: Gordon, Liz & Mark

Gordon Fyfe is the Great Grandson of David Fyfe, the Chief Engineer from the SS Glenelg. David Fyfe played a pivotal role when the ship was sinking. At first, he took a Fireman's axe to the bulk heads in an effort to find the leak that was causing the ship to sink. The when the captain call 'Abandon Ship' it was David Fyfe who helped the passengers into the life boat. Then, realizing that the life boat was too full he stepped off the life boat, back onto the sinking ship and went down with the Captain & First Mate on their ship. So when Gordon approached me about somehow getting him to dive the site I made every effort I possible could to make it happen. Normally it would not have been a problem as the Glenelg is only in 30 metres of water, but, Gordon had never dived before and he lives in Canberra. So with a little bit to-ing & fro-ing he managed to complete his theory, then with a day in the pool with PP, Gordon and his wife Liz were ready to try the open water. It was a cold day & the hail pelted onto our heads as we had our dive brief on the pier. We did manage to get 2 dives in & Gordon & Liz were now ready to attempt a boat dive.
