Diving in Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay |
|
| Scuba diving in Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay is enjoyed all year round by divers for many different reasons. If you like wreck diving then Melbourne has more than 76 different sites that can explored inside and outside Port Phillip Bay. You can snorkel or shore dive wrecks such as the Ozone in Portarlington, the J3 Sub off Indented Head, or the Lonsdale wrecks at the entrance to the bay on the Lonsdale side. Boat diving will open up many more diving opportunities for exploring Melbourne's large amount of wreck diving sites. Some of the more popular wreck dives include, J4 27m Submarine, Coogee, Eliza Ramsden, also the Ex-HMAS Canberra which has been deliberately scuttled. For technical diving Melbourne's ship's graveyard provides many scuttled wrecks such as barges, old bucket dredges and some old bay steamers all varying between 40 and 70m deep. |
If you are an underwater photographer, the piers such as Blairgowrie, Rye, St Leonards are fantastic for macro life. Port Phillip heads or the rip provides some amazing wall diving opportunities. The top of the walls start at around 10m and then plunge down to a max of 100m, the depth at different sites will vary with location. Lining the wall brightly coloured zoanthoids, ascidians, soft corals and many different species of fish make for many good opportunities to snap and another image or ten. If you are after some seafood for the table then we have abelone, crayfish and scallops that can be taken. A recreational fishing license is required to be able to do this, they are available here. |
